In preparation for their forthcoming international against Wales at St Georges Park, England took on a Weston Select Team under the guidance of South West regional manager Lach Geddes. A 4 -1 victory for the National side was considered an excellent workout as the Weston Select Team showed their quality. Captain Neil Browne’s deflected shot put England ahead and goals from the impressive Paul Kirby and Neil Evans meant a comfortable 3 - 0 half time lead.
In the second half England played out various scenarios to ensure their preparation was complete. Andy Billingham latched onto an uncharacteristic mis directed Browne pass to give the visitors a worthy goal. Mark Hooper and David Harris also went close as the visitors pressed hard, a Neil Evans goal with 10 mins left confirmed the victory and ensured their unbeaten run continued, as Paul Walton finished with three impressive unselfish assists... After the game Manager Paul Murtagh commented,
“With missing Brads (Darren Bradley) and Milly (Mike Milligan) it gave us a perfect opportunity for a couple of the guys to have some effective game time. I thought Paul Kirby had his best game for England and Trevor Hanson took his opportunity really well to prove how valuable he can be.”
